JAY Bothroyd has the ability to force his way into the QPR first-team, according to boss Harry Redknapp.
Bothroyd returned to Loftus Road this week after a spell out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday under his old Cardiff City pal Dave Jones.
The 30-year-old scored just one goal in 14 appearances for the Owls and failed to feature in any of their last seven matches.
That form is not going to win him a place in Redknapp's plans but the Rangers boss is willing to give the former England international the chance to impress before making his final decision.
“We all know he's got ability,” said Redknapp. “He went to Sheffield Wednesday and it hasn't gone very well for him. Dave Jones knew him from Cardiff and you'd have thought it would go well but he's back here now and it's up to him – work hard and have a go – he's got the ability there's no doubt.”
Bothroyd is one of three forwards to return to QPR since the turn of the year, with Rob Hulse's spell at Charlton and DJ Campbell's time with Ipswich coming to an end.
Hulse made 15 appearances and scored three goals for the Addicks while Campbell banged in 10 goals for Ipswich.
Campbell perhaps has the best chance of forcing his way into the Rangers set-up but Redknapp is not prepared to overlook any of his frontmen before casting his eye over their talents.
He is expected to make several changes for this weekend's FA Cup clash with West Bromwich Albion, giving the out of favour forwards a chance to stake a claim for a first-team spot.
“Hopefully he [Campbell] can come in and do a bit for us,” added Redknapp. “I've always thought he works hard, scores goals, and they tell me he's a good lad.
“Jay Bothroyd and Rob Hulse are back as well. Their loans are all up so they've come back to the club. I came in here and had no pre-conceived ideas about who was good lads and who was bad lads.
“They're all here and they're part of the squad at the moment. We've got a month to make our minds up who is going to come in and if I can get a few in then obviously I've got to let one or two go out of the squad.”
