Fulham 0-1 Manchester United
WAYNE Rooney put the lights on Fulham's brave efforts with a goal 11 minutes from time to give the league leaders all three points at Craven Cottage.
Defeat was hard to take for Martin Jol's men, who gave as good as they got for most of the game. They were even contemplating the prospect of snatching a famous win when United's striker pounced.
Rooney has often been a scourge of the Whites and he showed the composure and technique more readily associated with strike partner Robin Van Persie this season.
Racing onto a long ball down the left channel missed by Philippe Senderos, the England forward opened up his body to curl a shot around Aaron Hughes and beyond Mark Schwarzer's left hand.
It was his 10th goal in 11 starts against the Whites.
Rooney also struck a post during an eventful first half that will be remembered for a floodlight failure just before the break that caused a hold-up of nearly 10 minutes.
Bryan Ruiz also fired against the inside of a post as Fulham showed infinitely more stomach for the fight than they did last week at Old Trafford, when they bowed tamely out of the FA Cup.
John Arne Riise forced David De Gea to tip a fine 30-yard effort over the bar in a thrilling first half that also saw Patrice Evra hit the bar and Sascha Riether have a shot cleared off the line.
Fulham fans were treated to a first sighter of Urby Emanuelson (pictured), who came on for Girogos Karagounis midway through the second half, and his smooth touches dovetailed nicely with the industry of Chris Baird - who was tireless in tracking back to snuff out danger.
But the Whites - missing the injured Dimitar Berbatov - could not quite breach the United rearguard, although it needed a clearance off the line from Van Persie in the dying minutes to keep out a Senderos header as Fulham pressed for an equaliser.
