Walsall 1-0 Brentford
JAKE Reeves was sent-off as Brentford bowed out of the Capital One Cup at Walsall.
The Bees midfielder received a straight red for a reckless tackle on Adam Chambers as Ashley Hemmings' early goal separated the sides at the Bescot.
The visitors flew out of the blocks; Harry Forrester had a long shot tipped wide, Kevin O'Connor headed over from close range and Reeves had a goalbound effort blocked inside the opening 10 minutes.
But it was Walsall who took the lead totally against the run of play.
O'Connor's last-ditch tackle denied Will Grigg, but when the ball broke to Hemmings, he fired across Simon Moore into the bottom corner.
Brentford continued to pile forward, but they were almost caught on the counter through Grigg, only for Moore to parry away his effort.
However, they were dealt a massive blow midway through the half when Reeves received a straight red card for a studs-up tackle on Chambers.
The decision appeared harsh on the Bees youngster, who was given his marching orders after referee Andy Woolmer consulted his assistant.
Forrester was foiled by Grof as the visitors searched for an equaliser, but they had Moore to thank for keeping them in the game when he dived full-stretch to turn Florent Cuvelier's long-ranger around the post.
After a half-time reshuffle, which saw Toumani Diagouraga replace Saunders, the Bees started the second period on the front foot, with Forrester being denied spectacularly by Grof.
Diagouraga should have levelled things up just after the hour mark when he volleyed over Clayton Donaldson's cross from close range.
Donaldson was the next to be denied when Grof beat away his effort after breaking free in the Walsall box.
However, they were unable to find an equaliser as they fell at the first hurdle.
