Post mortem due on suitcase body

The results of a post mortem examination on the body of a woman found stuffed in a suitcase and dumped on farmland are expected.

Inquiries were also being made to establish the identity of the woman, whose age and ethnicity are unknown.

A woman walking her dog found the case in a dried-up pond on farmland off Buckland Road in Cliffe, near Rochester, Kent, just before 1.30pm on Thursday.

Buckland Farm remained sealed off while forensic and search teams investigated the scene.

Speaking at a press conference at the site, Ch Supt Steve Corbishley said it was unclear how long the pond - known locally as the Old Pond - had been dry. It is also unclear how long the body had been inside the suitcase.

Officers from Kent Police were trawling missing person records to find out whether the woman had been reported to police, he said.

Landowner Jaspar Wright, who lives at Buckland Farm, declined to comment, but other residents of the village on the Hoo Peninsula spoke of their shock.

Natalie Filmer, who lives near the farm, said: "I heard about it on Facebook. People are very shocked."
