Angie Bray, Conservative MP for Ealing Central & Acton, provides this week's Constituency Matters column.
I hope as many people as possible have noticed the posters going up around Ealing town centre and on the Town Hall advertising the upcoming Music and Film Festival over the Valentine’s weekend in February.
Hopefully these will inspire as many local residents as possible, and indeed visitors, to support the many different events, making sure that it all goes off successfully.
The idea started during a packed meeting in the Town Hall back in February 2010 when the people came together to discuss the future of our town centre. In particular, we were considering the arrival of game changers like Crossrail, and how best we could build on this to re-enliven central Ealing. I suggested that we might want to emulate the success of the summer events based in Walpole Park with a winter festival that would encourage people to come into the centre to enjoy a variety of events – and spend some of their money in the local economy.
Three years later, we are about to see the fruits of the hard work put in by a dedicated group of committed locals. In partnership with the University of West London, with the support of the Council and the backing of Ealing Studios, we now have a weekend line-up that is based on Ealing’s brilliant heritage of music and film. I’m proud of the fact that most tastes will be catered for, with everything from classical music to rock and roll and a classic film or two from Ealing Studios, as well as tours of the Studios themselves.
My job once the Festival’s organising committee got going was mainly to open a few doors to secure backers and supporters. I’ve been thrilled and amazed by the generosity of the many local businesses, and one or two individuals as well, who have made it possible to get this project off the ground. If we can demonstrate good local support this year, then I think this will become a new annual event for Ealing.
Tickets are on sale and are selling fast, please come to support the Festival. Here’s the link to the website http://www.ealingmusicandfilmfestival.org/
