My Trade Ealing - Matthew Hall hypnotherapist, Marlborough Road, Hillingdon Heath.
A FORMER social worker has made it his mission to master the power of the mind after witnessing the devastating effects of addiction.
Matthew Hall worked as a social worker in Hounslow for 15 years but after reading hypnotist Paul McKenna’s self-help books, he was inspired him to learn the art himself and change career.
In 1999 he enrolled on a course and has been building his company Effective Hypnosis, based in Mount Park Road, Ealing, ever since.
Business could not be better and it seems that hypnotherapy is a recession-busting trade.
“In the downturn, people always want to save money. I get regular phone calls from people who cannot afford their addictions any longer, and that’s where I can help,” he said.
The 51-year-old treats people who have trouble with quitting drugs, smoking or dieting as well as those with phobias.
During the 10 years he has been practising, he has had some peculiar requests.
“I’ve treated someone with for a fear of cats,” he said. “More recently I helped a lady who had a fear of vomiting, which was particularly problematic with the current norovirus epidemic.”
Hypnotherapy is shrouded in mystery and is often attacked by sceptics.
Mr Hall, who lives in nearby Hillingdon, explained that people have a warped perception because of the media.
“People get confused,” he said. “I am using a hypnosis state as a way to provide therapy. Hypnosis you see on the TV is entirely different – I have no nasty tricks.
“I often have to put people at ease. After talking for 20 minutes we assess the best things to target and then I’ll usually use tapping techniques to ease the client into a state between waking and sleeping.
“I eliminate their cravings through positive suggestions, and when they wake I make a recording that they must listen to regularly – but not while driving of course.
“I do this job to help people succeed and improve their lives.”
