Bulent Akkaya owner/manager of the Whitestone and Partners Acton Town Fish and Chips.
THE BOSS of Acton's latest fish and chip shop is hoping to create a business of which residents will be proud.
Bulent Akkaya's family have been in the trade for more than 20 years.
After running a pub in north London, the 37-year-old decided to follow in their footsteps and set up his own shop from scratch, allowing him to add his own personal touch.
Helped by a degree in interior design at De Montfort University, in Leicester, where he met business partner Sait Saitoglu, he had a big say in the look of his shop which he spends most hours a day, seven days a week.
He said: "We wanted to create a stylish fish and chip shop, helping to lift Acton's image along the way. It seems a little run down here, despite the expensive houses, but I know there are plans to improve things."
He heads up a team of four and works long hours, coming in in the morning to clean the fish and sometimes not locking up until 1am. But the joint owner of Acton Town Fish and Chips, in Gunnersbury Lane, rarely gets tired. He said: "Partly it's because I'm creating something and I've been able to put a lot of myself into the design.
But mainly it's the appreciation of the customers. We've been open about eight weeks and the feedback has been really good.
"It's because we use high quality products, our oil is ground nut oil which is more expensive, and we cook to order.
"I like to see happy people, to see the smile on their faces when they're enjoying good fish and chips. We've had people call us up to thank us. That's the payback."
Mr Akkaya, of Enfield, married his wife Dilek in July and he hopes the two of them will settle in Acton.
He said: "We have a business here but we want to find a place here too, so we can properly become part of the community."
